Jiun Koo (Korean, b.1990) brings together mythic imagination and contemporary imagery to conjure hybrid worlds inhabited by heterogeneous beings. Moving across species, gender, and the boundaries of the human, Koo unsettles the classificatory systems our society has long taken as “normal.” By stitching together scenes where animal and human, ritual iconography and contemporary visual languages interlock, Koo builds an unfamiliar yet vividly animated realm of new life-forms. Unfolding across the pictorial field, these imagined presences refuse confinement within a single category, loosening binary frameworks and pointing toward forms of life beyond familiar values. Through this hybrid cosmology, Koo explores the diversity of being and proposes new possibilities for coexistence.
구지언(한국, 1990년생)은 신화적 상상력과 동시대적 이미지를 교차시키며, 이질적인 존재들이 뒤섞인 혼종의 세계를 회화로 구축한다. 동물과 인간, 의례적 도상과 현재의 시각 언어가 맞물리는 장면들을 유연하게 이어 붙이며, 우리 사회가 “정상”이라 규정해온 분류 체계—종(種), 성별, 인간/비인간의 경계—에 근본적인 질문을 던진다. 화면 가득 펼쳐지는 새로운 생명체의 형상들은 단일한 범주에 포획되기를 거부하며, 익숙한 가치 너머에 존재하는 생명의 다양성과 감각을 드러낸다. 구지언은 이러한 상상된 존재들을 통해 이분법적 경계를 흔들고, 낯설지만 생동하는 공존의 가능성을 탐색한다.
